Leisure time and surroundings
Only about 50 kilometres by car from Vienna, the village of Hernstein is located in a typical summer resort region, the Triestingtal.
Lush meadows, rolling mountains, fresh air and pretty villages define the peaceful and relaxing surroundings. Here you can hike, cycle, even climb (Peilstein) - or marvel at historical, cultural and scenic sights.
A special feature of the Trieste Valley lies hidden deep in the pine forests: the forest is not just a recreational area, providing clean, fragrant air, but the valuable tree resin, known as the "pitch", is also still extracted from the black pine typical of the region. Extracting resin from the black pine in and around Hernstein is unique in Central Europe. The dying craft of "pitching" was designated an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011 and can now be discovered up close by guests of Schloss Hernstein. In addition to themed trails, pitch festivals and museum facilities with guided tours, it's the black pine products such as schnapps, skin creams, pine shavings etc. that are gaining in popularity.
As relaxing and quiet as Schloss Hernstein is, many sights and excursion destinations, such as the Semmering or the Hohe Wand, are in the immediate vicinity. The spa town of Baden, boasting its theatres and the largest casino in Europe, can be reached in 15 minutes by car, the federal capital Vienna in 35 minutes.
The same goes for the high and well-preserved Araburg near Kaumberg, the Triestingtal Museum of Local History or the adventurous Steinwandklamm gorge. The "Berndorf style classrooms" will arose your curiosity and are definitely worth seeing: these are classrooms from 1908/09 that were furnished in twelve different styles, from Ancient Egypt to Baroque to Empire style.
From a wine workshop with our winegrowers to a bike tour through the Trieste Valley, from a cosy evening at the bar to relaxation in the wellness area, from a team-building event with our adventure partner to a hike to the Araburg - the possibilities offered by the surroundings of Hernstein and Schloss Hernstein are manifold.
